Fall Semester, 1999, 3 cr, MWF at 9:50 am, 346 LJH

Course Objectives

This course represents an introduction to the Land Resources & Environmental Science Department curriculum. It seeks to introduce students to land resource management topics and demonstrate how basic environmental and ecological sciences are applied in an interdisciplinary way to solve problems. Each land resource management topic will be addressed by a multidisciplinary team of scientists from LRES. The course will focus on the basic science concepts that underlie each topic. Students will learn how objective, science based information can be developed and applied in a team atmosphere to assess issues and offer problem solutions. Each topic will be covered in 6 to 8 lectures and will terminate with a discussion period. In addition, the class will take 2 field trips to experience, first hand, some of the issues and topics in environmental science and resource management.

Student Involvement

We expect a high level of student involvement. Lectures will involve discussions as well as information delivery. Ask Questions!!!

Students will be asked to find, synthesize and present information.

Attendance at discussions and field trips is very important and will be graded.

Student Evaluation

Each of the 5 topics has 100 possible points. Students will receive the points through various means in each section. Quizzes, problem sets, group projects, writing assignments, and short papers will be graded. The specific approach including details on readings, assignments, and quizzes, will be described at the beginning of each section. There will be a final exam worth 100 points.
